Buying guide
A picosecond laser that does four things: what each energy mode adds to your clinic

Most clinics meet a picosecond laser as a tattoo-removal tool. That is the entry point, not the ceiling. Skin does not respond to one kind of energy. Some targets need to be shattered. Some need to be warmed. Some need a controlled micro-injury to remodel. A platform that delivers more than one of these from a single footprint earns across more of your schedule.
What does a picosecond laser do besides tattoo removal?
Tattoo removal is the entry point, not the ceiling. Pro 1 Pico delivers four kinds of energy from one footprint: true 500 ps pulses that shatter pigment and ink, PicoFusion™ that stacks pulses for collagen, long-pulse 1064 nm Nd:YAG that warms vascular targets, and fractional LIOB that resurfaces texture, pores and acne scars.
Start with the picosecond credential
Everything else rests on the pulse itself. Pro 1 Pico is a true 500 ps picosecond platform. A genuine picosecond pulse is shorter than the time it takes pigment to conduct heat to its surroundings, so energy goes into fragmenting the target rather than heating the tissue around it. Ask any vendor for the documented pulse duration in writing. See our 10-point picosecond buyer’s checklist.
The four behaviours
| Behaviour | Mode on Pro 1 Pico | What it does | What a clinic can offer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shatter | True 500 ps picosecond pulses, with PTP dual-pulse delivery and energy up to 1600 mJ | Photoacoustic fragmentation of pigment and ink | Tattoo removal, stubborn pigment |
| Stack | PicoFusion™ | Layered picosecond pulses delivered in rapid succession to build dermal heating | Collagen, pores, fine lines |
| Warm | Long-pulse 1064 nm Nd:YAG | Thermal delivery | Redness, telangiectasia, selected veins |
| Resurface | Fractional LIOB | Microscopic zones of controlled injury that trigger remodelling | Texture, pores, acne scars without ablative downtime |
Four wavelengths are offered: 1064 nm and 532 nm as standard, with optional 585 nm and 650 nm pigment handpieces. Wavelength decides which pigment a pulse can target. Mode decides how that energy behaves once it arrives. You need both.
Why mode count matters for the business
Tattoo removal is a course. A patient finishes and leaves. Rejuvenation, pigment and vascular work bring patients back. A pico platform that covers only the first category runs fewer hours a week, and utilization is what drives return on a six-figure purchase.
Consider the alternative a buyer is actually weighing: a separate device for pigment, another for vascular, another for resurfacing. That is multiple capital purchases, service contracts, training curricula and treatment rooms. One platform that covers several categories consolidates all four.
Questions to ask about any picosecond platform
- What is the documented pulse duration at each wavelength?
- Is there a stacked or rejuvenation mode? How is it described and approved?
- Is there a long-pulse thermal mode for vascular concerns?
- Is there a fractional mode, and what does it treat?
- What does training cover, mode by mode?
A platform that answers all five is a service menu. One that answers only the first is a single-service device.
