Buying a Used Cosmetic Laser: 12 Questions to Ask
Before wiring money for a used cosmetic laser, verify ownership, shot count, handpiece condition, warranty, parts and service access, regulatory status for your market, and the true landed cost — then compare it against a new, financed platform on total cost, not sticker price.
A well-documented used laser from a reputable dealer can be a perfectly rational purchase. Plenty of clinics have bought pre-owned platforms and done fine. But the used-equipment market is also where the worst equipment stories in this industry come from — units with undisclosed liens, odometer-style shot-count games, dead handpieces sold as “tested,” and configurations that were never licensed for the country they landed in.
The difference between the good outcomes and the bad ones is almost never luck. It’s diligence. Here are the twelve questions to get answered — in writing — before any money moves.
1. Who actually owns the unit?
The party selling a laser and the party that legally owns it are not always the same. Aesthetic lasers are frequently financed or leased, and a unit with an outstanding lease balance or a lien against it can be repossessed from you even after you’ve paid in full.
Ask for proof of title. Ask directly whether the unit is subject to any financing, lease, or security interest, and get a written lien release or payoff confirmation before wiring anything. In Canada, a PPSA search on the seller is cheap insurance; in the US, a UCC search does the same job. If a seller resists this question, that is your answer.
2. What is the shot or pulse count — and how was it verified?
Most platforms log total shots, pulses, or hours. That counter is the closest thing a laser has to an odometer, and like an odometer it tells you how much life the energy source and optics have consumed.
Ask for the current count, ask how it was read (a photo of the service screen, not a number typed into an email), and ask whether the counter can be — or has been — reset. On some systems counters reset with board replacements or software reloads, which is legitimate; undisclosed, it’s a problem. If the seller can’t produce the count, price the unit as if it’s high.
Cross-check the number against the unit’s paper trail: the original install date, service records, and the kind of practice it came out of. A five-year-old platform from a high-volume medspa and a five-year-old platform from a part-time practice are different assets wearing the same model number.
3. What condition are the handpieces in, and what is their history?
On many platforms the handpieces and applicators carry a large share of both the value and the wear. A mainframe in good shape with exhausted handpieces is not a bargain — replacement or rebuilt applicators can cost a meaningful fraction of the entire used price.
Ask which handpieces are included, their individual shot counts where logged, whether any have been rebuilt or replaced, and by whom. Ask for energy-output verification on each one, measured with a calibrated meter, with the readings in writing.
4. What did “certified pre-owned” or “refurbished” actually include?
Neither term has a standard definition in this industry. One reseller’s “refurbished” is a full teardown with replaced optics and a calibration report; another’s is a wipe-down and a power-on test. Both will use the same word.
Ask for an itemized list: what was inspected, what was replaced, what was calibrated, what test protocol was run, and what documentation you receive at delivery. A seller doing real refurbishment work will be glad you asked, because it distinguishes them. Vague answers mean you should price the unit as-is.
5. Is there any warranty — and who honors it?
Three different parties might stand behind a used laser: the reseller, a third-party service company, or (rarely) the original manufacturer. They are not interchangeable. A 90-day reseller warranty from a firm two time zones away, with no field engineers, is a very different asset than a transferable manufacturer warranty.
Get the warranty in writing and read for: duration, what’s covered (specifically whether handpieces and optics are), who dispatches service, parts turnaround, and what happens if the warrantor can’t fix it. Also ask whether the original manufacturer will support the unit at all — some will not service or sell parts for grey-market or unrecertified units, which quietly converts your warranty into whatever the reseller alone can deliver.
6. Can you actually get parts and service where you operate?
A laser is revenue equipment. When it’s down, the cost isn’t the repair bill — it’s the cancelled treatment schedule. So the question isn’t “is service available somewhere,” it’s: who is the specific service provider for your city, what is their committed response time, and where do parts ship from?
Ask what the three most commonly replaced parts are for the model, their price, and current availability. For older or discontinued models, ask directly whether parts are still manufactured or are being harvested from donor units. A platform whose parts supply is donor units has a countdown clock on it.
Finally, ask what happens to your schedule during a repair: does anyone offer a loaner or priority turnaround, or does every fault mean the unit — and the revenue — waits for a courier? The answer separates a service network from a service promise.
7. For Canada: does this configuration hold a valid Health Canada licence?
Class 3 aesthetic laser devices sold in Canada require a Health Canada Medical Device Licence, and the licence attaches to specific models and configurations — not to a brand name. A used unit imported from another market may look identical to a licensed model and still not be covered.
Verify it yourself in Health Canada’s public MDALL database: search the licence, confirm it’s active, and confirm the model name on the licence matches the model on the unit’s rating plate. Why it matters beyond compliance: an unlicensed configuration is difficult to insure, difficult to service through official channels, and difficult to resell — so the licensing question is also a residual-value question.
8. For the US: is the model 510(k) cleared?
In the US, aesthetic laser platforms reach market through FDA 510(k) clearance — a device in this class is “510(k) cleared”; a listing that says “approved” is borrowing the stricter PMA pathway’s word, and a seller who says “approved” is at best being loose with the one fact you most need to be precise. Ask for the clearance status of the exact model, and confirm the indications you plan to market match what the model is cleared for. A used import that never went through US clearance can leave you unable to legally market the treatments you bought it to perform.
9. Is training included — and from whom?
Your team’s technique determines the outcomes, the reviews, and the safety record. New platforms typically ship with structured clinical training; used units often ship with a manual.
Ask whether any training is included, who delivers it (a clinical trainer or a sales rep), whether it’s on-site, and whether the original manufacturer offers training to second owners at all. If training costs extra, get that number now — it belongs in the landed cost in question 11.
10. What is the software and firmware status — and are there lockouts?
Modern platforms are software products as much as optical ones. Ask what software version the unit runs, whether updates are available to a second owner, and — critically — whether the platform uses any form of activation, licensing, or region coding that could lock features (or the whole system) after a transfer.
Some manufacturers require recertification of a resold unit before they’ll provide software support, consumables, or service. That’s their right — but it means the recertification fee is part of your purchase price, so get it quoted before you buy, not after.
11. What is the total landed cost?
The number on the invoice is the beginning of the cost, not the end of it. Add:
- Freight and insurance (lasers ship as delicate, heavy cargo)
- Customs, brokerage, and taxes on cross-border purchases
- Rigging and installation, including any electrical work
- Recertification or inspection fees where required
- Training, if not included
- First stock of consumables, filters, and tips
- Any handpiece rebuilds identified in question 3
Then add the item nobody invoices: a repair reserve. An out-of-warranty unit should carry a line in your budget for the repairs it will eventually need and the revenue lost while it’s down — because on an unwarranted asset, that cost is yours alone.
Run this total honestly and the gap between “used” and “new” narrows considerably — before the first out-of-warranty repair is even priced in.
12. What does the equivalent new platform cost with financing?
This is the question the used-equipment market hopes you skip, because the comparison is closer than the sticker prices suggest. A used unit is usually a cash-heavy purchase of an unwarranted asset. A new platform is a monthly figure on a warranted one, with training and manufacturer service built in.

That deal exists, and a reputable dealer will help you prove it exists.
